When big-time music producers like Jermaine Dupri want to know how their latest hip-hop records are faring with fans across the country, they don’t wait for results from polls by media research groups. They simply drop by popular strip clubs! “It’s always been a place I go to hear new music and see a real response to my records and others,” the So So Def Records CEO confides to Jet. If the exotic dancers can get can their grooves on to a new hot track, it translates into big bucks in tips for them and millions for the recording industry. “If the girls really like to dance off one of your records, nine times out of 10, it’s gon’ to be a hit record,” says Dupri.

It’s back. The 51st Annual Ebony Fashion Fair has announced its theme for the 2008/2009 season–The Runway Report: What’s Hip, What’s Hot. What’s Now!–and unveils its new 13-member modeling troupe. Show commentator Jada Collins describes the new show as an “investigative report on style.” It debuted Sept. 3 in suburban Chicago. “From hip-hop street wear to celebrity glamour, the Ebony Fashion Fair runway is keeping inquiring fashion minds informed through a high-powered and energetic presentation,” says Collins.

As Greg Holt, a 61-year-old delegate from Willow Grove, PA, sat in the front row of the converted football field, a tear welled up in his eye. “My parents, I wish they could see this,” said Holt as he gazed toward the majestic stage and the future of America. “For me, to still be alive and see that this Black man could really, really become president…it’s just, well, incredible.” In a momentous speech that left some 90,000 people at Denver’s Invesco Field fired up and emotionally drained, Sen. Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination for the U.S. presidency and became the first Black major-party nominee in American history.

Superstar Toni Braxton will be delivering sizzling sambas and torrid tangos on the upcoming season of “Dancing With The Stars”. She along with ex-NFL defensive tackle Warren Sapp and Olympic track star Maurice Greene are the Blacks among the 13 celebrity contestants. Others competing for the coveted disco ball trophy include actresses Cloris Leachman, Susan Lucci and Brooke Burke, actors Cody Linley, Ted McGinley and Jeffrey Ross, Olympic volleyball player Misty May-Treanor, singer Lance Bass, celebrity Kim Kardashian and celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito.

Black History Quiz
Dubbed the father of Black History, this native of New Canton, VA, who earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University, founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History this week in 1915. Currently called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), the organization has more than 30 branches nationwide devoted to the collection and preservation of historic contributions by people of African descent. The acclaimed author, historian and journalist died in 1950 but fostered the development of an annual celebration of Blacks’ accomplishments that in 1976 became Black History Month.
