**1/2  TWO AND A HALF STARS

Anne Thompson, the long time reporter of Hollywood biz and co- editor of the show business bible, Variety, last week wrote about the concept of The Fluke Zone. The Fluke Zone is that rarefied status that some movie stars attain where they can do no wrong in the public’s eyes no matter how bad their film is. It could be the worst film of the century and people will flock in droves to see it simply because they’re so beloved by the public. Movies stars such as Harrison Ford and Eddie Murphy have all at one time in their careers experienced what it’s like to be in the Fluke Zone. But it never lasts. One too many stinkers eventually turns the audience cold and after that it’s usually hit or miss with those actors who were once “in the Zone”.

The latest occupant in the Zone is Will Smith. He’s definitely had more than his share of god-awful disasters as The Wild Wild West and Bad Boys II will attest, but his position in the Zone has remained firm. But, the word in Hollywood and on the Internet is that his popularity is about to be put to the test with the negative advance buzz about his latest summer blockbuster, Hancock. The reality is that, though it’s far from perfect, it’s not nearly as bad as the rumors made it out to be.

In this day and age where movies are afraid to challenge themselves and their audiences, it’s a relief to see Hancock try to do something different and challenging. It has an intriguing premise that, if it had the courage of its convictions, could have been a real and unique winner. Instead it’s an ambitious failure, filled with missed opportunities and obvious last minute compromises.

The premise, which is a send-up of the played out superhero genre, is in itself clever enough and has potential in abundance. In the film Smith plays Hancock. a superhero in Los Angeles on the skids. Homeless, foul mouthed, surly and frequently drunk, Hancock has the annoying habit of creating more damage and wanton destruction and breaking laws while stopping criminals or ordinary citizens from sudden death. All of this doesn’t make him the most popular guy around, and he incurs anger and wrath from the public, the police and the media.

After saving the life of Ray Embrey (Bateman), a struggling PR image consultant, Embrey sees in Hancock a golden opportunity and, despite the objections of his wife (Theron) finally convinces Hancock  to recreate his image, first by agreeing to do prison time for his acts and then with a whole image makeover including a new superhero suit and haircut. But Hancock finds himself in uncharted territory when, halfway through the film, things go not as planned.

The film’s subversive nature is nicely played out in the first half of the film and it’s admittedly refreshing to see Smith, in effect, smack down and tear apart his usually perfect image. But, after the big plot twist Hancock goes completely off the rails.

The film’s reported post-production problems, which involved re-editing and extensive shooting of new scenes,  clearly takes it toll  along with softening the film from a rumored R-rating to a more family friendly PG-13. The end result is a second half that flounders around going from one set piece to another with no real narrative clarity. A massive fight scene, for example, complete with lightning storms and tornados, involving Hancock and another character, comes out of nowhere, seemingly with no reason or logic . Though we learn about the origins of Hancock’s super powers they remain strangely vague, nor do we learn why he’s such a jerk in the first place. Was he that way before he acquired his powers or did he change afterwards?

Maybe even worse is the film’s sudden switch to heavy, fantastical drama which throws the film completely out of whack.  It’s as if the filmmakers and Smith got scared that audiences would be put off by his character’s unlikable, negative personality and decided to make him more sympathetic.

Surprisingly, also for a film with a reported $180 million budget, the special effects are for the most part pretty third rate , on the level of a 1950’s low budget sci-fi thriller. Director Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights, The Kingdom) is  usually a terrific director with a keen visual style and sense of pacing, but perhaps he might have been the wrong person for the job. The film’s grainy, rough-hewn, purposely ugly cinematography and his over use of tight close ups would have been more appropriate for an action thriller or drama and not a film like Hancock where a lighter touch is needed from a director with an understanding of satire.

After watching Hancock and seeing what it was trying for, all one can do to put it on the list of films that might have been if they hadn’t chickened out. At least it deserves credit for making an effort.

This critic is way off. This film was made for people to laugh. Maybe you should stick to Star Wars and/or ET. Laughing is not your thing. Your audience is not that serious.

This critic is totally wrong on so many things...

There is an explanation for why he's such a jerk. He's an outcast, the only one of his kind, he's inclined to help people with his super powers but every time he does, he's cursed for all the things he does wrong. The PR guy says it in the film: "you reject people just because people reject you." Also, if you were paying attention you'd remember that he's ALWAYS had his powers.

I thought the film was entertaining. Some of the scenes and the language may not be suitable for the kids, but I didn't think it was that bad of a film.

Although, I am in agreement with some of the previous points, Mr Berg suggests some insightful observations about the movie that cannont be ignored. The tornadoes during the brawl between Smith and Theron erupted out of nowhere. The fact that this viewer accepted this gaff in the narrative supports his initial premise of the "Fluke Zone" Mr. Smith appears to be enjoying.

I have only seen one preview on television. I will see the film and if it is not good, I will be one of those who will help to keep Will Smith in the "Zone." He is one of my favorite actors and always will be.

I loved the film. I liked the plot twist, which no one saw coming. People might have thought something was up, but never would have guessed what was shown. Also, the tornados and storm came about, if you were paying attention, by Theron... she had power to make heat and apparently weather changes as well. I love Will and love most of his movies enough to see several times.

I cannot say enough about Big Will. He is so personable and loveable. I'll go see the bad ones just to sit and watch him on screen. I myself enjoyed Hancock and will go see it again. It was such a joy to sit there and watch a movie and get the laughs, the drama, the sadness all in one. Will, you've done it again and I would NEVER call you the "A" word! (lol)

The movie was great I loved it. In the movie Theron said that her power was stronger then Will's and that's why when they where fighting the lighting ect...came along. It was because of her anger that caused all of that rage. It was most defiantly a family movie and on top of that, it was funny.

I saw it yesterday and loved it and so did those who came with us. They even said they would buy it when it comes out. I thought the story was different. Well, I was getting ready to say some of what I liked, but forgot there are those who haven't seen it, so I don't want to give it away. It's worth seeing. And I will always support my brother, Will. He's a good guy and love all that he does and tries to do! Go see the film for yourself. Don't let critics deter you.

I sat in a theatre FULL of people laughing and enjoying this movie. The theatre is showing the movie in TWO theatre rooms. Critics obviously are people who have NEGATIVE attitudes about anyone other than themselves. You want to have a GOOD time - go see THIS movie!!

Russell says:
This reviewer is way off. This film is breaking new ground. When you say you don't understand where the storm came from, the other superhero says she's more powerful than Hancock. This movie has smartly placed subliminal messages, like racism,is the reason they were attacked, hence they couldn't be together. The film's surprise is refreshing. This is a movie worth your time and money. Not to mention the big laughs.Great entertainment.

STOP TELLING THE MOVIE!!! Everyone has not seen it. We all know the critics get it wrong. But I agree that the plot twist could have gone another route. However I loved the movie and already PAID to see it twice! Go see the movie- you will love it!

I actually went out to go see it because I am a big Will Smith fan but to be honest I think Hancock is one of those films that you should wait until it comes out on video. It lacked a point and a purpose.

I saw the movie with my family, including my small grandsons, thought it was just ok, and could have done without the profanity. Afterall it was rated PG13 - not R (which should have been the rating). I still think that Pursuit of Happyness was Will's best performance to date. I'm not really a fan, but the kids love him. I have to agree with Sergio on this one!

Shirley says:
I liked the movie a lot. Saw it with my 17 year old son and my mother and they both loved it. I understood the storm scene. He used a word on the other superhero that was a trigger and that brought about the storm because that superhero's powers were so strong. The twist kinda pissed me off at first because I didn't like that the majority is always bigger, badder, better than the minority but it ended well and I was happy with the movie. The very last scene was hilarious.

This movie was great! I loved it and so did my family. It's a nice wholesome movie that the entire family can and will enjoy. The critics never speak for my particular tastes in movies, particularly with a star like Will Smith!

This film was not meant to be serious, only very entertaining, and as attested by it's #1 rating in box office sales last weekend, it appears to have accomplished that goal. I say: Way to go, Will. Thanks for showing that you're not afraid to be flesible to entertain us, regardless of the movie genre, all the way back from movies like 6 Degrees of Separation. I guess it's a good thing that we don't have to depend on the Critics before we make a decision as to which film we'll spend our bucks.

This movie was hilarious! I haven't laugh this much at a movie in a while. What an original movie by one of the best african american actors of our time.
I think Mr. Mims went to the movie theater with his mind set to disparage this movie. He and all the other critics have been haten on Will Smith for a while. Because of their comments about "I am Legend," I almost missed another good Smith movie.
I think the critics are jealous because he's the man right now.

I havent seen the movie yet, I really want to. I'm (hate to admit it) but one of those kind of bums, that never catches the movie while its out in theaters and forget to buy it when it comes out on video, (so predictably i never end up seeing it) I plan to see Hancock! I heard about the terrible reviews from the critics and was disapointed, but the ppl's reviews have been much better. I am a huge will smith fan,but why does every1 hate Wild WW
